Cookies usage and you

Postby salem » May 29th, 2011, 2:42 pm

phpBB (the forums software in use here) does not handle any personal info of users, except birthdate, if the user has even entered that. No personal info is put in cookies, and phpBB does not use tracking cookies.

In accessing this board
You agree to the “phpBB software” creating a number of cookies, which are small text files that are downloaded on to your computer's web browser temporary files. The first two cookies just contain a user identifier (hereinafter «user-id») and an anonymous session identifier (hereinafter «session-id»), automatically assigned to you by the phpBB software. A third cookie will be created once you have browsed topics within our site and is used to store which topics have been read, thereby improving your user experience.

If you do not agree with above please read last paragraph.*

Are cookies bad guys ? I never clear them ... unless, of course, they are covered in chocolate and on a plate next to a glass of milk!

Cookies can be bad guys, they can relay everything you do back to their source, clever ones can open the door to all sorts of malware.
Children are like Slinkys - not much use for anything, but it always brings a smile to your face when you throw them down the stairs. Chinchilla

It's not that cookies are neccessarily bad , this board wouldn't work properly without them but ours are totaly innocent being session cookies,
while some dubious sites might use the invasive tracking type improperly .
The reason for the topic is that a new Euro wide law is being proposed where the user has the right to reject any cookie .
If it goes ahead as written then we'll all have to shut down in a years time , as the software automatically assigns two cookies to a guest
on entering the site which as the proposed law would stand will be illegal .
As a member , everyone has agreed to allow them by registering but a guest hasn't.
It looks as if L_J has knowledge of the reason for adding the topic , with his response.
