This was Yann Martel's first book and the one before the famous Life of Pi. Very odd read that I'm not sure I would have finished if I hadn't been on holiday laying around in the sunshine in Lanzarote.
Right. Are you sitting comfortably with nothing else to do but read this? Self is about a - person. Who starts off as a boy then grows into a woman then back again. On the surface, it does sound full of potential but to be honest, I think it was a bit self indulgent and pretentious. There are some excellent observations and situations and maybe a rare degree of insight. Not for the feint hearted.

Yes this is the real "Little John" (or it could be "colin")

Re: Self - Yann Martel (The life of Pi man) - odd
When we go on holiday I try and find books that we can both read. (we don't have kindles and space is premium when traveling.
I certainly would have not finished this book at home, it was so weird. I decided on Yann Martel as a book to read as we had both read Life of Pi on holiday over 10 years ago. However if you fancy a challenge...
