Rather the Devil - Ian Rankin (G)

Post by Little John »

A really easy read. Like slipping into a pair of comfortable slippers. First published in 2016, Rebus is now retired and working freelance; much to the chagrin of some of those on the force who were glad to see the back of him.

Rebus is worried about a shadow on his lung but keeps his mind off it by looking into cold cases that his friend Siobhan Clarke has smuggled out of the archive. Whilst revisiting the evidence, things start to happen to the the people in the file, notably the retired detective who last worked the case. A local gangster is beaten up on his doorstep, and Rebus suspects his old nemesis, Big Ger Cafferty is involved.

Cafferty offers a titbit by way of "look for the Russian" but is that just a "Red Herring" (pun intended). Lots of characters on both sides but all well formed. Lots of humour albeit a bit on the dark side. Old rock stars, old bankers, old gansters (and a few new ones) drugs and rock n roll; and murder. Lots of murder. The blurb says "Old enemies. New crimes. Rebus may be off the force , but he certainly isn't off the case".

Thoroughly enjoyable!
Yes this is the real "Little John" (or it could be "colin")
