The Winter King - Bernard Cornwell (G)

Post by Little John »

This has been sitting around for so long I'd forgotten where it came from and assumed I'd already read it. But I searched here for a review and found nothing so thought I'd give it a go to see if i remembered any of it.

Well there was a familiarity about it in that the story is told by the hero but as an historical account written down later in his life when he had become a monk.

It tells the story of Arthur and Guinevere and Merlin and the story teller, Derfel, in a real "Boys Own" swash buckling tale with plenty of swords shields and spears but not a lot of real magic on the wizard front. Britons v Britons and sometimes Britons v Saxons in a post Roman dark age.

Not sure it's to everyone's taste but the battles are described blow by bloody blow for page after page. But of course we know the story teller and Arthur survives or there wouldn't be a story to tell. There is also a woman wizard's apprentice called Nimue.
Yes this is the real "Little John" (or it could be "colin")
