The Thursday Murder Club - Richard Osman

Post by marymary »

If you like a comedic whodunnit with a myriad of pensioner characters this may be the book for you. The comedy comes from the residents of a retirement community who are often overlooked by the police and other professionals because of their age but their existing skill sets, and willingness to flout the rules, allow them to run rings around the police several hours before they would have cracked each clue. Think Agatha Raisin - in a retirement community - next to a graveyard.

There are several murders in the present which may or may not be connected to events in the past. Not every character is who they claim to be and not every character faces normal justice by the end of the novel. That said, without giving too much away, justice is served. The murderer(s) are not who I expected them to be. I was so sure one literary device was being employed because that person was a killer but they weren’t.

Several characters make it through to the end, which is just as well because there is a sequel.

Pro tip: make notes at the start about who they all are or you may get lost when one or another suddenly appears again after a few chapters.

And it might be an idea to write down your own name 8n case you forget that, too!

Goodness, MM! You might have just retired but it was very early and you're still young woman!

:D
Yes this is the real "Little John" (or it could be "colin")

It's being serialised on Radio 4 next week.

Is this the one that Steven Spielberg has shown interest in?
