I read them all in a back-to-back session because I got a bargain lot of them. I haven't read the final one because I think it would be too depressing but I loved the others.

Just started Evening's Empires by Paul McAuley. Described as "hard Science Fiction". It started off a bit weird but now I've caught on with the style its actually quite good and exciting and an easy read once you get used to it.

Orkney by Amy Sackville http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/book ... aring.html

I read her first novel - The Still Point - which I thought I had written a post about but apparently not.

She has a nice turn of phrase. The novel is about an older man with a young wife who takes her to Orkney. My friend who passed on this book has been to Orkney, as have I, years ago and we like to read novels set there.

Has it got a laid back feel? I loved Captain Cordelie's mandolin for that reason.

I really like it but am finding it hard to finish only because I am nodding off after a few pages. There's a lyrical quality but not much pace.

The Fortune Hunter by Daisy Goodwin, only a quarter of the way through, so far seems like a light hearted Jane Austen type novel. Based in 1875 a young woman, Charlotte, has inherited all her mothers income and has several men after her attention (including Bay Middleton who got a married woman pregnant). So far so enjoyable but as they have also thrown in the Empress of Austria and her sister the former Queen of Naples I am expecting some scandal before the end.

The Road by Cormac McCarthy. I found it among a pile of books from a book sale. Best book I've read for ages!

I've read,a couple of hers and was surprised that enjoyed them. The house on the strand was the best.

I'm now almost exactly half way through my second Haruki Murakami book - The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle. I suspect it wouldn't be to everyone's taste but for me its an amazing excellent book. Incredible insight - but weird. In a really good way.
