The Unthanks

Post by SRD »

After the success of The Imagined Village there's been a movement amongst the bigger folk names towards presenting 'a Show' rather than just a gig.
The latest offering from the Unthanks follows this trend being built around the songs and poems of Molly Drake (mother of Nick & Gabrielle). With a set dressed to look like a fifties upper middle class sitting room, back projected photos and video clips and recorded readings interspersed with arrangements of the Drake songs.
The Unthanks did this particularly well, there's an unsophisticated feeling to their work that captures the homespun themes of the songs that resonate so strongly with an audience used to the memes of the social networking sites so they deliver the material in a straightforward and honest way with no hint of parody or of collapsing into mawkishness, which must be a very difficult tightrope to walk.
Lovely singing and fine musicianship made the evening for me and has converted MrsSRD to a band she'd previously been less impressed by. No clog dancing though.

Wot! No clogs!

Love the Unthanks. In fact we are on their mailing list.
Yes this is the real "Little John" (or it could be "colin")

I had heard about Molly Drake. Always fancied seeing The Unthanks, was it local?

Bradford on Avon, it's 25 miles which is about 40 minutes away.
