Macgregor/Adewale/Brendel

Post by SRD »

A stunning concert at the Wiltshire Music Centre with three superb musicians, Joanna Macgregor at the piano, Adriano Adewale on percussion and cellist Adrian Brendel showing all the versatility that such an unusual line up can produce, I've never seen a cello played like an electric bass before.
The programme was based on South American themes and composers and opened with the trio playing one of Adewale's own compositions, a blinding solo from Adewale on the pandeiro followed then a billiant perfomance of Ginastera's Pampeana no II for Cello & Piano. The trio reformed for a performance of another Adewale composition and the first half was rounded off with the trio playing Macgregor's arrangement of four Brazilian Songs.
After the interval the focus was more on the Tango with Piazolla's Le Grand Tango followed by a duet between Cello & Berimbau. Macgregor played Ginastera's Danzas Argentinas beatifully and was then joined by Adewale for Gismonti's Forrobodo. Brendel returned for another Adewale piece and they rounded off the evening with three Tangos that Macgregor had written down when she played with Piazolla's band. That wasn't quite the end though, an encore of Weill's Tango Ballade from the Threepenny Opera with Brendel not only on cello but also vocals, capped an evening that will be long remembered.
