OAE Young Artists Ensemble "Voyage"
Wiltshire Music Centre
30/05/18

A most enjoyable lunchtime concert fom five of the young members of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. The works; Telemann's Concerto a 4, Pepusch Trio Sonata in G Major, Telemann's Trio Sonata in G Minor, Hotteterre's Sonate en Trio in D Major & Vivaldi's Concerto in G Minor were based on those heard, and commented on, by a 17th Century traveller called Orfenbach (If I heard correctly, but I can't find any reference to him).
Beautiful playing from all five musicians but Tabea Debus on recorder and Catriona McDermid on bassoon stood out particularly.

I can't find a vid. of them all together but here's one of Tabea Debus:

They were talking on the radio about how hard it is for musicians to make money these days. Playing in an orchestra leaves you on the bread line. Its only well established super groups like the Stones that make any money these days. So its best not to give up the day job.
Yes this is the real "Little John" (or it could be "colin")

All of the young artists in this band teach music in some form or another. Because they're at the top of their respective fields they've got jobs in places like the Royal Academy of Music, Wells Choir School etc. It's not nearly so easy for jobbing musicians which is one reason why there are so many women coming into the profession (it's not unusual for the classical music ensembles that visit the WMC to comprise of at least 50% women) in many households the man is still the main breadwinner and jobbing musicians just don't earn enough.
