Lucy Ward

Post by SRD »

Lucy Ward's voice just gets better and better, it's always been powerful but there seems to be so much more control nowadays. And she's more than adequate accompanying herself on any one of the various instruments she brings to the stage but is equally at home, if not better, at singing 'a capella' in deep Derbyshire vernacular. Add to that the strength of her song writing and it means an excellent evening's entertainment, even the P.A. seemed on top form. It was just a shame so few people turned out to see her.
Ok, a few of the regular members of the David Hall audience might blanche at some of her stridently left wing songs about the various iniquities to be found in today's society, sombre subjects powerfully delivered which contrast heavily with the girlish giggles and obvious delight in life that link each number.
And those songs and her solo performance might also put off those who prefer their folk music in the manner of Seventies Folk/Rock bands.
But there was plenty of variety, from Protest through C&W to songs from the Derbyshire tradition, those who didn't turn out missed a treat.

This is one of her protest songs, but do check out her rendering of Mike Waterson's "A Stitch in Time" on Youtube.

No one told me it was on! And I've no idea where David Hall is.

But sounds good.
Yes this is the real "Little John" (or it could be "colin")
