Post by marymary »

I have an Amazon delivery - boo hiss - of 3 books and 1 BBC DVD arriving later today.
The main book is I’ll Keep You Safe.

The Blurb

Peter May
Quercus, 2018 - FICTION - 366 pages

A thriller that alternates between the glamorous fashion world of Paris and the rugged beauty of the Isle of Harris in the Scottish Hebrides. When a fabric entrepreneur is killed in a car explosion in Paris, Niamh, his wife and business partner, becomes the prime suspect. The Parisian police continue to hound her when she returns to Harris to bury her husband's remains. After an attempt is made on her life, Niamh has to wonder if the motive is simply money, or something far more personal.

Id love to have it after you but the last time someone from the book forum posted me,a book, the postage was more than the value of the book.

Well.

Theresa read a few reviews on Amazon and most of them were not good. The main complaint was about the plot being a bit slow and the ending unbelievable. But I could read anything by Peter May - even instructions for a microwave oven. His powers of description are enviable and transporting. Tis true that most of the book is about clouds and sky and rocks and moorland and very little about the "plot" and maybe the end, when it does eventually come, does border on shark jumping but for me, it was a thoroughly good read.

Marymary's review in the OP talks about an attempt on the heroin's life. This comes very late in the book and, although a major part of the ending, it was almost just a sub-plot. The story for me, was a woman coping with the loss of her husband, reminiscing about their life together and how their lives had intermingled with the lives of those around them on the rugged, remote and windblown isle of Lewis.

Maybe when Lady P has read it, we could discuss the ending a bit more.

The above link did not come out as I would have liked it but that is the song mentioned in the book which I have now read. I enjoyed the book but read a few reviews that were not favourable. The ending was the problem with folks. However, it was a good read and kept me gripped. I have a need now to visit Lewis.

I fancied her house. I despised her husband for his actions.

Lady P swore she guessed the ending. I suppose the fact that the remains were given to her in a shoe box might have been a clue but you'd think there might have been a dna test or something in the circumstances. And i suppose the repeated references to the "friend" stealing her boyfriends and then dropping them might have got you thinking.

It did seem to me that all the action happened in the final few pages almost as,an afterthought. And i did groan a bit when he came back from the dead. Not a very plausible explanation. And did the French detective really have to die?
